Woodhey Road Garden Project
Young people and children of Woodhey Road in North Prospect wanted to transform a piece of derelict land in their street. As its much used cut through that joins Ham and North Prospect together, it can be a haven for anti social behaviour and litter. By working with Groundwork Devon and Cornwall and North Prospect Partnership, the group began to work together to try and decide what they would like to see in the garden. After an inspirational visit to the Eden Project where the group worked with their Play Spaces architect they came up with a design for the garden that would bring the community together.
We were then lucky enough to receive funding from Mark and Spencers through their carrier bag scheme to complete the hard landscaping of the project. The work was carried out over the spring holidays with children and young people getting as involved as possible, from digging to sawing, mixing cement and making the willow tunnel – young people now have real ownership of their garden and have learnt many skills in the process.
